Just for a Smile: Teaching Kids Geometry

Yesterday, my 6 year old son and I studied angles during his 2nd grade geometry lessons. To help him remember the names of the angles, we pretended the lines ‘grew up’, and I explained to him that as angles are ‘young’ they are ‘acute’. After which we would say, “awww look how a-cute!”

Then I explained to him, when angles get ‘older’, over 90 degrees they are falling back over and they are ‘obtuse and it is harder for them to stand back up.

Then he asks me, “Mommy are you obtuse? Because you’re older?”

I started laughing, because he has no idea that obtuse also means dim-witted. Kids are so funny!
