She was alone. She was distressed. She feared her reputation. She was in labour, a physical state, in which most women don’t find it easy to do anything at all. Yet, Allah SWT asked her to shake the palm-tree to get her provision (dates). You may be distressed and horrified with certain events of Qadr. You may be carrying a heavy burden. But you must still take steps for your provision. It’s not difficult for Him to provide you with provision (patience, good grades, good job, peace, whatever you’re seeking etc.) If He SWT wanted Maryam AS to learn and take the means, don’t we have a lot to learn? Just b/c we’ve been ‘patient’ for so long doesn’t automatically mean that we should give up taking action! A woman in labour can’t shake a tree hard enough to get dates! So what’s the possible wisdom? Allah SWT wanted to show us that no matter how heavy a burden we’re carrying, Allah SWT will still want you to take the means and put in effort, however small your effort is. Don’t predict the probability of your success by the magnitude of your personal effort. Measure it by the sincerity in your intention and how much your remembered Allah SWT throughout the action. Tests will be there. But they shouldn’t stop you from taking action! By being hopeless and not taking any action, you’re destroying your chances of getting His Mercy. Sure you may be weak but your Rabb is Al-Qadeer. He’s on your side and He SWT can subdue the entire world to serve your needs. Just have that conviction and see where it takes you inshaa’Allah!
She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” (20)
He said: “So (it will be), your Lord said: ‘That is easy for Me (Allâh): And (We wish) to appoint him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allâh), and it is a matter (already) decreed, (by Allâh).’ ” (21)
So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place (i.e. Bethlehem valley about 4-6 miles from Jerusalem). (22)
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date-palm. She said: “Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!” (23)
Then [the baby ‘Īsā (Jesus) or Jibril (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her, saying: “Grieve not! Your Lord has provided a water stream under you; (24)
“And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.” (25)
[Quran, Surat Maryam]
Why all this? What was the purpose of her tests?
And (remember) when the angels said: “O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allâh has **chosen you**, purified you (from polytheism and disbelief), and **chosen you above the women of the ‘Alamîn** (mankind and jinn) (of her lifetime).” (42)
[Surat Ale Imraan]
“Duaa is the weapon of the believer. So the enemy’s going to be after it all the time.”
And Allah SWT knows best.
