True happiness seeks permanent residence in the heart when one distances oneself from all creations and draws closer to the Creator. For most people to be able to reach that realization, it takes much time. Quite often, Allah SWT tries to remove the objects that cause that distance from Him as a reminder that He SWT cares enough to single us out and give us opportunities to draw closer to Him Alone. With nothing else in the way, the path to Allah SWT becomes much more easier. There is much khayr (goodness) for the believers in it.
When that happiness starts settling in after one starts taking the means to get closer to Allah SWT, there could still be this constant fear. The fear of subconsciously allowing distractions of this world, the adornments of this world, to become the source of happiness. In other words, the fear of ending up seeking happiness through closeness to the creations and this materialistic world rather than through Closeness to the Creator, starts disturbing the heart.
Adornments are but temporary. Allah SWT may not have decreed for us to live fully to that stage to even experience those adornments. Or Allah SWT, the Always Most Merciful to His Believers, may remove that adornment from our lives sooner than we expect if we become too dependent on it. So if this source of happiness is not real and not lasting, we must not allow it to overcome our true source of all happiness in this dunia and Akhirah. We must appreciate Allah SWT’s Gifts and use them to seek that true happiness and not lose focus.
When there is this danger of losing focus, which is the case with most of the believers, it is important then to continuously seek distance. Not forsaking the blessings and not being ungrateful for their presence. Rather, choosing not dwell too much on them. Perhaps briskly walk away from such adornments in one’s mental space so that one’s lowly Nafs doesn’t entice one to depend on them for happiness. A life lived on the basis of such high degree of falsehood and wrong dependencies is in reality living a delusional life.
When one lives his entire life in this state of delusion, can such a person ever correctly traverse the Path to Allah SWT’s Pleasure? Blinded by the glitter of the adornments, even a person of sight loses track.
By being patient with this constant fear, a believer must strive not to allow his loyalties to change. He mustn’t foolishly lose lasting happiness while seeking temporary happiness.
All the claims of loving truly Him must be shown through action.
Ibrahim AS was tested and he was successful.
In him AS is the example for those who seek to be reminded.
And Allah SWT knows best.
Surat at-Taghabun, aya 14
Tafseer of this beautiful verse right here.
