“يا رب ، كيف أشكرك وشكري لك نعمة منك علي ؟”
“O Lord! How can I ever duly thank You, when my thanking You is also a favor from You to me!”
Allâh is He Who has created the heavens and the earth and sends down water (rain) from the sky, and thereby brought forth fruits as provision for you; and He has made the ships to be of service to you, that they may sail through the sea by His Command; and He has made rivers (also) to be of service to you. (32) And He has made the sun and the moon, both constantly pursuing their courses, to be of service to you; and He has made the night and the day, to be of service to you. (33) And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allâh, never will you be able to count them. Verily! man is indeed an extreme wrong-doer, – a disbeliever (an extreme ingrate, denies Allâh’s Blessings by disbelief, and by worshipping others besides Allâh, and by disobeying Allâh and His Prophet Muhammad SAW). (34)
Allah SWT has created everything following a proper course, following certain laws and subdued His Creations to a human’s use and benefit. Imagine, everything in service to… who? To us! The roads are flat so we can walk on them. It is such a big Ni’ma and only those people can recognize it when they have to climb steep roads layered with sheets of black ice in -34 degrees Celsius. Extremely slippery roads and there’s no way out but to walk on them. It is only then you recognize such a huge blessing it is to have Earth which yields to you and doesn’t throw you off and makes you slip if you’re a sinner!
The Sun, in obedience to Him, shines on, even if we disobey Him. The beautiful moon is a source of adornment of the skies and while we seek pleasure looking at it, it is also used to measure time. SubhanAllah! The sunshine revitalizes us, our hormones and kick-starts our metabolism properly…not to forget the Barakah Rasulalah salalahu ‘alayhi wasalam made duaa for, for his Ummah, in this time-period. The night for our melatonin, another hormone which only gets activated in dark, necessary for our propagation, mental organization and peace. We all know how painful it is to turn on the lights when we wake up. Yet it is amazing how beautifully Allah SWT merges the night with the day, slowly ‘turning on’ the lights, the dawn gradually giving way to the sun to rule the entire horizon, ultimately reaching the zenith. Can’t you see His Mercy in these blessings? He SWT takes care of our subtle needs and has created the whole world based on our needs! SubhanAllah!
Everything for us…
…so that we can focus on Him! Allahu Akbar! Imagine not having these blessings…how difficult life would be!
But sadly we use these very blessings given by Him to distract us from Him!
Notice how Allah SWT repeatedly uses the word
in the above verses. I never saw so much repetition of that word in ayahs one after the other and of course I could be wrong…Allah SWT knows best. But it’s worth noting this word’s repetition. When you love someone, you communicate to this feeling to them and let them know by saying that ‘this is for you’, ‘especially for you’. Sometimes you may have to communicate that more often because perhaps the other person doesn’t understand your language of love.
To Allah SWT belongs the Highest and Loftiest of Examples. This is Rabb al-‘Alameen saying just that! Within these ayahs we can reflect over His Love and His Right to be Worshipped. In the end Allah SWT says that as humans we’re extremely ungrateful. We are, aren’t we? How many times did you from the depths of your heart say Alhamdolilah in your privacy? Being grateful doesn’t only mean saying Alhamdolilah though. It is connected to His Obedience foremost. A way to show your thankfulness to Allah SWT is just by being more obedient to Him.
Whenever things seem difficult, think about these ayahs. Sure everyone has been gifted these very blessings but let me tell you the greatest blessing of all blessings after Islam, is recognizing these blessings as blessings! Being able to thank Allah SWT is a HUGE blessing and in it lies that special sweetness which only special people can enjoy!
So you may have everything that you love and want but if you don’t have the ability to thank Him and worship Him through that thankfulness, you’ll never ever be able to enjoy those blessings! How sad is that! Please strive to seek the positive and all those blessings within the challenges of your lives. At the end of the day, your heartaches, your sadness, your happiness, everything will end right here. What goes forth is what you have earned in these moments of happiness and sadness…nothing else. And every moment is crucial for it may be a deciding factor between our destination either being Paradise…or…may Allah SWT protect us from anything other than Paradise.Ameen.
See how much a difference it makes to notice and ponder over ayaat! Whenever you need some tender loving care (which I’m sure you need everyday like me), hook yourself up with the Quraan. Your soul will be nourished inshaa’Allah, provided that you yearn for guidance through the Quraan :)
Something beautiful that I wanted to share:
In Sahih Al-Bukhari it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah salalahu ‘alayhi wasalam used to supplicate;
«اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ غَيْرَ مَكْفِيَ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبَّنَا»
(O Allah ! All praise is due to You, without being able to sufficiently thank You, nor ever wish to be cutoff from You, nor ever feeling rich from relying on You; our Lord!)
[Source of this narration: Beautiful Tafseer of above ayahs in Tafseer Ibn Kathir]
Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Kathir said,
‘Narrated to us some of the people of al-Hijaz who said, ‘Abu Hazim said,
“Any blessing that does not result in coming to close to Allah the Exalted, then it will be a cause of worry (i.e. on Day of Judgement).’
[Hilyah al-Awliya’ 2/497]
And Allah SWT knows best.
