A Quraanic Gem ( أَوَّاهٌ ): Learning about & Celebrating Ibrahim ‘alayhi salam’s Attachment to Allah SWT

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله وسلم على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن اهتدى بهديه إلى يوم الدين

Allah سبحانه و تعالى said about Ibraheem عليه السلام:

إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَأَوَّاهٌ حَلِيمٌ

“…Verily Ibraheem was Awwah and Haleem.”

[At-Tawbah, 114]

إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّاهٌ مُّنِيبٌ

“Verily, Ibraheem was Haleem and Awwah and oft-returning (in repentance).”

[Hud, 75]

The word “Awwah” has been used only twice in the Qur’an; and both times to describe Ibraheem عليه السلام – It loosely translates as “one who invokes Allah with humility, one who glorifies Him and remembers Him much and has no doubt etc…”

Question: What is the significance of the word أَوَّاهٌ (Awwah) and why did Allah use it to describe Ibraheem?

[Note: ‘Awwah’ is from the onomatopoeia – or miracle sounds – found in the Qur’an. According to some books of Tafseer, its relationship to Ibraheem عليه السلام is based on what Ibraheem used to do and say]

  1. Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullah sister,

I saw some posts on your blog maashaa’Allah I found them very interesting

I am in my final year at university insha’Allah and I have to write a 10,000 word essay as an Independent Study Project in Arabic Studies. I wanted to choose a topic relating to the Qur’an/Islam, For eg. I loved this post of yours…tafsir, parables, Imagery, Stories.. I’d really love to research anything relating to the Qur’an – it’s just that I don’t know how to formulate my interest into a topic that is broad enough for 10,000 words but also focused.

I assume you must be really quite busy, but if you happen to have any ideas or advice, I would appreciate your it insha’Allah

    Jazaakillahu khairan
    was-salaamu ‘alaykum

    • asalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

Sister S., you might be interested in reading this book for your question:

    • Walaykumusalam warahmatullah sister,

JazakAllahu khayran for your kind words.

Obviously I’m not someone who should be asked about this because I personally don’t have any knowledge that you require regarding the language. However I can definitely point you towards sources which will help you in your writing.

Have you decided what your thesis statement will be? Maybe a vague idea? It will also help if you tell me if it is for a Linguistics course or otherwise. Each department has its own demands (History will be different from English and so on). Please bear in mind that your audience will have a huge impact on your writing style as well so thinking about that will determine the complexity of your topic at hand and the detail you’d want to go to. As a result this important piece of info will help you in choosing your sources.

      Ameen, wa iyak.

I love independent studies because they unlock opportunities which change you forever so I’d be happy to be able to contribute in any way possible within my capability of course. Do you have any helpful supervisor? Also, there are some Da’ees who are Arabic Linguistics specialists who could help you in your project. Try searching for some in your area first before you go online.

We can get in touch through email if you prefer not to disclose any private info here. Let me know if that’s what you’d like.

      All the best!

      Take care,
      -Umm Sulaym

      • Thank you so so much for offering your help, advice, and time sister!!.. maasha’Allah that’s so kind!
Alhamdulillah, my course convenor approved for me to do it on the topic of Coherence (nazm) in the Qur’an (specifically surah al-Baqarah).. and I also have to look at coherence in Arabic poetry. I still have to get a supervisor and start the research/reading insha’Allah..

Jazaakum Allahu khairan for the kind and helpful replies

        Baarak Allahu feeki!

Enlighten the Ummah
