“What is it that your Lord has said?”

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله وسلم على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن اهتدى بهديه إلى يوم الدين

Yawns impregnate our intermittent recitations as we ignorantly glide over Allah SWT’s Words with our deficient tajweed and non-existent understanding just in order to rush to our daily affairs, whose Controller, which we fail to recognize is none other than the One  whose Words we do such injustice.

The Word of Allah SWT was and will remain a serious matter.

Its inspiration was. Its revelation was. Everything related to it was and will shall always remain.

Very heavy. Very serious. And very important.

The most devout of creations felt its heaviness:

Intercession with Him profits not, except for him whom He permits. So much so that when fear is banished from their (angels’) hearts, they (angels) say: “What is it that your Lord has said?” They say: “The truth. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”

[Surat Saba, 34:23]

[From: ‘An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur’aan’ , pp. 68; Reported by ak-Bukharee, Ibn Khuzaymah, at-Tabaraani, and others. This hadeeth is in reference to the verse 23 in Surat Sabaa]

Consequently, the creation which is the best due to its ability to use its intellect, must then use its intellect and consider it equally serious. At least much more serious than matters which occupy our mind when we recite the Quraan inside and outside of the Salah.

Abu Malik at-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:

Cleanliness is half of faith and al-Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fills the scale, and Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) and al-Hamdu Liliah (Praise be to Allah) fill up what is between the heavens and the earth, and prayer is a light, and charity is proof (of one’s faith) and endurance is a brightness and the Holy Qur’an is a proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves.

[Sahih Muslim; Book #002, Hadith #0432]

Is the Quraan a proof against us or for us considering tons of opportunities to learn about it?

While it is something we should take seriously, it is a source of happiness and indeed All Praise and Gratitude to Allah SWT alone for such an immense blessing of the Quraan.  The Mufassireen have interpretted the words in the red font as Islam and Quraan:

قُلْ بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَبِرَحْمَتِهِ فَبِذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَفْرَحُوا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ

Say, “In the bounty of Allah and in His mercyin that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate.

[Surat Yunus, 10:58]

Shouldn’t we all then rejoice as Allah SWT has asked us to?

Shouldn’t we all show that happiness through the way He has asked us to?

Our tongues should feel honored to recite His Kalaam and our bodies should feel honored to be able to put Quraan into action. Our hearts should long to feel its presence in our lives.

A life revolving around the Quraan is worth living. A life other than that causes death of the heart and ultimately one’s happiness in both worlds.

Don’t you want to know what your Lord has said?

Don’t you want to be part of the special happiness?

And Allah SWT knows best.
