“How poor are they that have not patience! What wound did ever heal but by degrees?”
I have lots of good memories attached to Surat at-Taghabun. Whenever I needed some sort of specific guidance in my personal life, it had to be in this Surah every single time subhanAllah. Today too, I found something that touched my heart and elevated my mood to the next level alhamdolilah and I knew I had to share this happiness with others.
In ayah # 11, Allah SWT says:
No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah . And whoever believes in Allah – He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.
From Tafseer Ibn Katheer:
مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ
(No calamity occurs, but by the permission of Allah,) Ibn `Abbas said; “By the command of Allah,” meaning from His decree and will.
وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
(and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is the All-Knower of everything.) meaning, whoever suffered an affliction and he knew that it occurred by Allah’s judgement and decree, and he patiently abides, awaiting Allah’s reward, then Allah guides his heart, and will compensate him for his loss in this life by granting guidance to his heart and certainty in faith. Allah will replace whatever he lost for Him with the same or what is better. `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas,
وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ
(and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart.) “
Allah will guide his heart to certainty. Therefore, he will know that what reached him would not have missed him and what has missed him would not have reached him.”
What could be a compensation better than the guidance of the heart for all the calamities a slave goes through?
For not only He draws His slave near in his time of need by making him solely dependent on Him but also gives him certainty that nothing and no one in this world can rectify his affairs except Him. And those granted the mind’s eye to appreciate the khayr in calamities have truly been given the greatest of blessings and that is: the appreciation of who his Rabb really is – Ar-Rahmaan, the Only One Merciful even to the worst of beings, Ar-Raheem, the One Especially Merciful to His beloved – the One whom in His Extreme mercy allows His ‘abd to go through trials so that through his patience, Allah SWT grants him the best of wages in this world, i.e. Yaqeen in Allah SWT. Everything in this world will be granted to a human through a means. Health through good food and lifestyle, money through work and so on. These are the laws of this world that He SWT created. And in this specific context, yaqeen through patience during calamities. SubhanAllah. You gain so much more than you think you lost or suffered. What good is any ease when there’s no joy in a barren heart and how easy are those trials when the slave has Yaqeen, contentment and happiness through belief in Allah SWT! Allah SWT has made the believers rich through Eeman and thus guidance. All our affairs, therefore, have great khayr in them. Let the restless hearts find peace in this beautiful ayah. Know that if you have Yaqeen, you have everything. Your Rizq will come from places you have never imagined. Your aid will come through means you have never would’ve foreseen. That’s the power of Yaqeen. For the Most Merciful hates to disappoint His slave, especially a slave in need. All forms of perfect and continuous praise belongs to Allah SWT and we hope to be mentioned by Him in His Pleasure in the Heavens both in our good and challenging times.
May Allah SWT guide our hearts through the Quraan to that which is most pleasing to Him. Ameen!
“Our real blessings often appear to us in the shape of pains, losses and disappointments; but let us have patience and we soon shall see them in their proper figures.”
And Allah SWT knows best.
