بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله وسلم على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن اهتدى بهديه إلى يوم الدين
And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship (health-wise etc.) that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].
[Surat’l An’aam, 6:42; tafseer here.]
Allah SWT tests people through adversity, hardship, affliction, poverty, physical pain, emotional pain, problems within family…why? To torture people?! To harm people?!
What’s the wisdom behind it?
So that they turn to Allah SWT. So that they remember to thank Allah SWT. So that they remember to seek refuge in Allah SWT. So that they remember to seek His Help.
It is so that we turn to Him.
People object and say, ‘Allah SWT is Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem – where’s His Mercy? How come I’m not shown any mercy?’
This is His Mercy that He’s sending problems your way so that you turn to Him.
Allah SWT sends minor calamities before sending bigger so that people wake up from their state of heedlessness.
تضرع (taDuru’) is so important that Allah SWT will send ba’-saa
and darr-‘aa so that the person shows تضرع.
So instead of complaining, we should then show تضرع or humility infront of Allah SWT in such circumstances.

And Allah SWT knows best.
